HR1 and HR4 carry the Cathedral streets and the farmland at Backbury alike, and those two kinds of floor have little in common. The county boundary is no guide either, Herefordshire being a single authority end to end. Age settles a Hereford floor, and it wants establishing before anything is priced.
Detached and semi-detached houses together account for most of Hereford’s stock, with terraces well behind. In the historic core – Castle, Central, College – the ground floor is suspended timber laid over earth or rubble rather than a modern ventilated void, so airflow underneath matters as much as levelling on top.
Two-thirds of households across Herefordshire own their home, and an owner is choosing for the long run rather than the next tenancy. Over the timber ground floors common in HR1 and HR4, Engineered Oak Wide Plank is stable, provided the airbricks are left clear.
Timber ground floors move with the seasons, and an engineered board handles that better than solid; it can be sanded back once or twice in a house kept long-term.
Shop rangeWipeable and low in build-up, it suits a utility room; over a ventilated timber floor it wants a proper base board rather than being laid onto the boards direct.
Shop rangeLower cost per square metre for a house let out at Bobblestock or Credenhill; in the older centre it sits awkwardly against period joinery and uneven floor levels.
Shop rangeHereford covers HR1, HR2 and HR4 — Castle, Central, College, Aylestone Hill, Bobblestock, Belmont Rural and out to Credenhill. Herefordshire is a unitary authority covering the whole county. Ownership was 66.4% at the 2021 census with private renting at 18.8%, up 3.3 points. Hereford is a cathedral city with a compact historic core and a large rural hinterland, and that shapes the practical advice more than the tenure split does: in the older centre the ground floor is suspended timber and often laid directly over earth or rubble rather than a modern void, so ventilation under the floor matters as much as levelling. Block the airbricks and you create a damp problem the floor gets blamed for.
At the 2021 census, 12.0% of households in Herefordshire, County of lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment and 86.9% in a house or bungalow — 16.3% of all households in a terraced house.
