Underfloor heating only performs as well as the floor you put over it. Some floors pass heat through beautifully, some insulate your expensive warmth away from the room, and one classic choice can actually be damaged by it. Here is the ranking that matters, with the numbers to check before you buy.

The two numbers that decide everything
First, thermal resistance, measured in tog: the lower the tog of floor plus underlay, the more heat reaches the room. As a rule of thumb, keep the combined tog of the floor covering and underlay at or below about 1.5, and use underlay specifically made for underfloor heating.
Second, surface temperature: wood-based floors are commonly limited to a 27°C surface temperature by their manufacturers. A decent thermostat with a floor probe holds this automatically. Respect those two numbers and almost every modern floor we sell is UFH-happy.
Why engineered wood is the real-wood answer
Heat dries timber, and drying makes solid boards shrink, cup and gap unpredictably: which is why solid oak over UFH is generally advised against. Engineered boards solve this structurally: the multi-ply core locks the oak wear layer flat, so the floor stays stable through heating cycles.
Choose boards around 14 to 15 mm or slimmer for better heat transfer, acclimatise them in the room before fitting, and bring the heating up gradually after installation rather than switching straight to full temperature.
LVT, tiles and laminate over UFH
Porcelain tile is the physics winner: it conducts heat superbly and stores it, ideal over wet systems in kitchens and bathrooms. LVT is a close practical second: thin, conductive and fully waterproof, with a warm feel even when the heating is off. Check the manufacturer’s UFH approval and temperature limit, which is typically 27°C.
Laminate works well when the manufacturer explicitly rates it for UFH; the HDF core is more heat-tolerant than many expect. Use a low-tog UFH underlay, never a thick insulating one, or you will pay to heat the underlay instead of the room.
