Dark herringbone, engineered properly

Oxford Dark Brown is the floor that makes a large room feel finished. The dark tone reads as a deliberate choice rather than a default, and it holds its own against both pale walls and dark cabinetry — which is why it ends up in open-plan kitchen-diners more than anywhere else.

Because it is engineered rather than laminate, the surface is genuine oak with a 3mm wear layer, brushed and UV oiled. The 14mm core is listed as compatible with underfloor heating, which a solid herringbone block of the same look would not be.

Fitter’s note: Glue it down. Herringbone blocks are short, and full-spread adhesive is what keeps the pattern tight and the floor quiet underfoot for its whole life.

Questions about this floor

Should it be glued down or floated?+

Glued. Herringbone blocks are short — 450mm here — and a floating floor made of short blocks flexes at every joint. Full-spread adhesive onto a sound, level subfloor is the specification, and it is also what stops the pattern creeping out of line over time.

How much waste should I allow?+

10–12%, not the 5–7% you would allow on a straight plank floor. Herringbone perimeters produce far more offcuts, because every board that meets a wall is cut at an angle. The calculator on this page uses 12%.

Will a dark floor make my room feel smaller?+

It will feel more enclosed. In a large open-plan space that is usually the point — the floor gives the room a base. In a small or north-facing room it works against you, and the light version of the same block is the better answer.

Is it suitable for underfloor heating?+

Yes — the specification lists this board as compatible. Commission the system before laying, run it down to 18°C, and bring the temperature back up gradually afterwards rather than in one step.
