Barry is the Vale of Glamorgan's town on the water – CF62 and CF63, with Baruc and Castleland at the core, Cadoxton and Gibbonsdown behind them, and Dinas Powys and Sully out along the coast to the east. Rhoose, St Athan and Llantwit Major sit further west on the same shore.
Semis, detached houses and terraces come in near-equal thirds here, giving Baruc, Buttrills and Gibbonsdown a mixed building stock. Ownership in the Vale of Glamorgan moved by a fraction of a point in ten years – households improve what they have rather than move on, and the flooring brief follows.
In a market this settled, the money belongs in the board rather than the fitting. A thicker wear layer on Engineered Oak Wide Plank can be sanded and refinished years later; a thin veneer cannot, and in Barry that difference decides the order.
With the local market barely moving, a thick wear layer earns its cost in Barry: it can be sanded and brought back rather than lifted and replaced.
Shop rangeTerraces make up a quarter of Barry’s stock, and LVT suits their back rooms and kitchens: wipeable, quiet underfoot, and forgiving of a subfloor that is not quite level.
Shop rangeLaminate costs less at the outset, but in a Vale house being improved for the long term the wear layer argument that governs Barry orders counts against it.
Shop rangeBarry covers CF62 and CF63 — Baruc, Buttrills, Cadoc, Castleland, Court, Dyfan, Gibbonsdown and Illtyd, with Dinas Powys to the east. It sits in the Vale of Glamorgan, a Welsh unitary authority, so planning and building control are one office. The tenure figures are the most stable of any town on this list: ownership 71.9% at the 2021 census against 72.2% in 2011, a change of three tenths of a point in ten years. Private renting rose just one point. Where a market barely moves, people renovate rather than churn, and the sensible spend is on the wear layer rather than the fitting: a 4 mm top layer can be sanded and refinished, a 2 mm one cannot.
At the 2021 census, 14.9% of households in Vale of Glamorgan lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment and 84.5% in a house or bungalow — 26.3% of all households in a terraced house.
