Plymouth was rebuilt more comprehensively than almost any English city, and the figures still show it: barely one household in nine is detached, while terraces and semi-detached houses together account for nearly two in three. The post-war plan is the housing stock.
Plymouth’s housing combines Victorian terraces in Mutley and Mannamead, characterful properties on The Hoe with its Sound views, family homes in Plymstock and Roborough, and waterfront developments around the Royal William Yard and Sutton Harbour. The city’s strong rental market, driven by the university and Royal Navy, sits alongside premium owner-occupier sectors.
Engineered oak in mid-tones is the most popular choice across Plymouth’s family homes and renovated terraces. LVT vinyl dominates waterfront apartments and rental properties, durable, waterproof and forgiving of coastal humidity. Laminate is the workhorse choice for the city’s large student rental market in Mutley and Greenbank.
Moisture-stable construction suited to Plymouth’s coastal climate and family homes.

Shop rangeTerraced housing accounts for 32.8% of the Plymouth stock, and another 25.4% of homes are flats, 16.2% of them purpose-built and 7.5% cut out of former houses. Deliveries run across PL1 to PL6 and PL9, taking in Devonport, Peverell, Eggbuckland, Honicknowle and Plymstock Dunstone. Terraces of that kind usually stand on suspended timber floors, so the order of work is a deflection check first, then levelling by ply overlay or compound, then the finish; the step that gets skipped is the one that telegraphs joist lines through vinyl a year later. Converted flats set a different constraint, since the floor is somebody else's ceiling and impact-sound underlay has to be settled before the wear layer is chosen. Private renting has climbed from 20.2% to 22.6% since 2011.
At the 2021 census, 25.4% of households in Plymouth lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment and 74.3% in a house or bungalow — 32.8% of all households in a terraced house.
