LVT and SPC Flooring Cost

LVT sits below engineered wood on material cost and can sit above it on fitting cost, depending on the method.

Material. LVT is commonly cited at around £15/m² at the entry end as a market comparison figure (Factory Direct Flooring); rigid-core SPC and commercial-grade wear layers sit well above that. The spread within LVT is the widest of any category on this site.

Fitting. Click installations are quick and comparable to laminate. Glue-down installation costs more — more preparation, more labour, adhesive, and a subfloor that has to be genuinely flat, because a glued floor telegraphs everything beneath it.

The specification that decides the price — and it is not the core

Wear layer thickness — the clear film on top — drives both price and lifespan. The same design is often sold in two or three wear layers at quite different prices. A domestic bedroom and a shop entrance are not the same job.

Buying a commercial wear layer for a spare bedroom is money spent on nothing. Buying a domestic one for a hallway with a dog is money saved once and spent again in three years.

Where LVT saves money that other floors do not

No underlay in many click systems — some have it attached. Thin build-up, so doors often do not need trimming. Waterproof, so a leak is an inconvenience rather than a replacement. Over ten years in a kitchen, that last point can be the whole argument.

Click or glue-down: the decision that moves the quote

The same design can be bought in a click format and a glue-down format, and the two produce quite different quotes for the same room.

Click floats over an underlay, often one already attached to the board. It is quick, it is the cheaper fit, and it can be lifted again. It is also the format that tolerates a slightly imperfect subfloor better, because it is not bonded to it.

Glue-down is bonded to the subfloor, so it is quieter and firmer underfoot and does not move at the perimeter. It is the specification for a large open area or a commercial floor. It also needs a genuinely flat subfloor, because a glued floor telegraphs everything beneath it, and that preparation is the line that carries the extra cost rather than the adhesive.

The wear layer, and why the same design has three prices

The wear layer is the clear film over the printed design. It does not change how the floor looks on the day it goes down and it decides how long it goes on looking that way. Ranges are commonly offered in more than one wear layer, and the cheapest of them is the right choice for a spare bedroom and the wrong one for a hallway with a dog. Neither is a better product; they are different specifications for different jobs, and the mistake costs money in both directions.

What LVT removes from the quote

Three lines that other floors carry. Underlay, where the click system has it attached. Door trimming, because the build-up is thin enough that doors often clear it. And, over the life of the floor, replacement after a leak: the board takes on no water, so an appliance failure in a kitchen is a drying job rather than a new floor.

What it adds

Subfloor preparation, and more of it than a click laminate needs if the format is glue-down. It is worth asking for the levelling to be quoted separately rather than folded into a rate, because it is the line that differs most between two fitters looking at the same room.

Wear layer thickness classes for vinyl

EN ISO 10582 does not link heterogeneous PVC floor coverings to a wear layer thickness in millimetres per class. Its published scope states that the standard specifies the characteristics of non-cushioned heterogeneous PVC floor coverings and that it includes a classification system (see ISO 10874) based on the intensity of use, plus requirements for marking - so the class number (23, 31, 32, 33, 34) describes where a floor is fit to be used, not how thick its wear layer is.

EN ISO 10874 — use classes

EN ISO 10874 sets out a classification of floor coverings by area and intensity of use; the classes are 21, 22 and 23 for domestic use, 31 to 34 for commercial use and 41 to 43 for industrial use.
