Ape Grupo

Ape Grupo is a Spanish ceramic manufacturer, and Spain is where most of the porcelain sold in Britain is made. What arrives here under that name is large-format porcelain in marble, onyx and stone effects — the tiles that do the work in a hallway or a bathroom and are meant to still be there in twenty years.

What to look at before you order

Porcelain is the one floor covering on this site that takes on no water at all and effectively does not wear. That makes it the specification for a wet room, a hallway that faces the weather, or a kitchen floor that has to outlast several kitchens.

Two things are worth checking on any porcelain tile before ordering, and both appear in the specification table on the product page: the finish and the frost resistance. A polished tile looks superb and is the hardest surface in the house to walk on when wet — matt and lappato finishes give grip that polished does not. Frost resistance matters the moment a tile goes anywhere it can freeze: a porch, a threshold, a garden room.

Large formats need a flatter subfloor than small ones, because a tile cannot follow a hollow. That is a preparation cost, not a tile cost, and it belongs in the quote before the order rather than after.
