What actually wears a family floor

It is almost never the children and almost never the dog. It is grit, walked in on shoes, dragged across the surface underfoot. Grit is harder than any finish and it cuts fine scratches that dull the sheen long before anything wears through.

This matters because it changes what you should optimise for. A harder finish helps a little. Mats at every external door help enormously, and they cost almost nothing.

The single best decision: A doormat long enough for three or four steps at every external door. It outperforms every product and every specification choice on this page.

Choosing for wear

Two decisions do most of the work, and neither is about the material.

Finish
Matt and textured hides daily marks. Gloss shows every one of them under a ceiling light.
Grade and character
A busier grain with knots and colour variation absorbs marks visually. A very uniform floor shows each one.
Construction
LVT is the most forgiving of water and impact. Engineered wood gives real oak and can be maintained.
Repairability
An oiled floor can be repaired in patches. A lacquered floor is recoated by whole area.

Room by room

One floor throughout looks best, but the hardest room should set the specification.

Hallway
The hardest working area in the house. Everything arrives here first.
Kitchen
Water and dropped weight. LVT or engineered wood, not solid.
Living room
The easiest room. Almost anything works if the hallway catches the grit.
Bathroom
Water as normal use. LVT or tiles.

The honest position rather than the marketing one.

Claws mark most floors
A textured matt finish disguises it far better than a smooth one. Keep claws trimmed.
Water bowls need a mat
A bowl on a wood floor is a small permanent spill.
Grip matters
Very smooth floors are hard work for older dogs. Textured surfaces and runners help.
Accidents need speed
Wipe immediately rather than later. Time is what turns a spill into a mark.
